Hip replacement revision more common in women
In a study of more than 35,000 total hip replacements at 46 hospitals with a median follow-up of three years, US researchers found females had a higher risk of all-cause and aseptic (but not septic) revision surgery.
The research found women were more likely to receive devices with a smaller (28mm) femoral head and devices with metal on highly cross-linked polyethylene-bearing surfaces.
Men’s implants were more likely to have a 36mm femoral head and have metal-on-metal surfaces.
