HIV patients set to benefit from new hep C drugs
Hepatitis C could soon be eradicated in the Australian HIV community, a Sydney expert says.
Professor Greg Dore of the Kirby Institute at UNSW said the new direct-acting antiviral drugs for hepatitis C due to come on stream in the next couple of years were far more effective and better tolerated than conventional interferon treatment.
Around 10% of HIV patients in Australia were coinfected with hepatitis C, he said, but with the new treatment there was the potential to eliminate the virus in this population altogether within five to ten years.
