HIV self-test kits for home now legal
As part of a revamped National HIV Strategy launched on Monday, Health Minister Peter Dutton said the decision to remove the restriction would increase opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment.
“Home self-testing provides an additional testing option that complements current options and allows people living with HIV to learn their HIV status and seek appropriate treatment and support.
“It also overcomes some of the common concerns people have about receiving the test in a medical setting and gives them more choice,” he said.
Under the new strategy, pharmaceutical companies will now be able to apply to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for approval to supply their test kits and sell direct to consumers if approval is granted.
