How BRCA mutations affect prostate cancer survival

Prostate cancer patients carrying inherited BRCA gene mutations have a significantly lower survival rate than non-carriers after conventional treatment, according to a study in the journal European Urology.

The Spanish-UK collaboration involving more than 1,300 patients shows a 10-year survival rate of 39% for carriers who had undergone radiotherapy compared with 80% for non-carriers.

Among patients who had undergone surgery, the difference in 10-year survival rates was 91% versus 67%.
