How long do Australian patients stay on a biologic?

Australian patients with rheumatoid arthritis are persisting with treatment on individual biologics for a median of just 8-9 months, despite the treatment being effective, a study suggests.

Information on nearly 3000 adult patients (75% female) with RA, prescribed biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), was obtained from routine consults with 50 Australian rheumatologists between 1997 and 2015.

Patients were prescribed a mean of 1.7 biologics, one after the other, data from the Optimising Patient outcomes in Australian rheumatoLogy Quality Use of Medicines Initiative
