‘Hurry up!’ call for HIV oral test

AUSTRALIA’s first large-scale study of HIV oral rapid testing has shown it to be effective and popular, prompting renewed calls for the kit’s approval and distribution.

The specificity and sensitivity of the OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test (OraSure) was comparable to the only rapid test currently TGA approved, the Alere Determine finger-prick blood test, the study showed. 

Study author, Sydney HIV specialist Associate Professor Derek Chan, said the oral test was a two-step process that could be undertaken at home.
