Hypofractionated radiotherapy backed in early breast cancer

Hypofractionated radiotherapy should be offered as a first-line option to selected breast cancer patients instead of conventional radiotherapy, says a Sydney-based radiation oncologist.

Dr Gillian Lamoury says the majority of patients with early breast cancer would meet the criteria for the shorter and more intense bout of radiotherapy.

Eligible patients should be aged 50 years or over, have a cancer at an early pathological stage
