Ice hockey players, fans floored by noxious gas
Around 30 players and spectators fell ill – with symptoms including haemoptysis and chest pain – after attending evening training sessions at the rink.
A propane-powered ice resurfacing machine had been used extensively during the day, after which workers noted a “yellow haze”.
“To prevent similar episodes, ice arena operators should ensure ventilation systems and alarms are operating properly and that levels of NO2 and carbon monoxide are monitored continuously,” the health department said.
