ICS prescribing at odds with guidelines

APPARENT one-off prescribing of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) has specialists worried that respiratory guidelines are being ignored.

A report released today, World Asthma Day, says that among the 6.8% of Australian adults who filled prescriptions for ICS in 2013, 15% were dispensed only one ICS during that year.

The authors, from the Australian Centre for Airways disease Monitoring (ACAM), said one-off dispensing was at odds with adult clinical guidelines for asthma and COPD, which recommend ICS be “prescribed on a regular basis for extended periods of time”.
