Incidence of type 1 diabetes increasing

The new figures show that among Australians aged 10–18, the annual incidence of type 2 diabetes was three per 100,000 and did not change from 2001 to 2008.

However, the annual incidence of type 1 diabetes in this population was 22 per 100,000 and increased by 3.8% per year.

The incidence of type 2 diabetes was nearly seven times higher in Indigenous youth.

The data came from the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group Diabetes Register and was independently compared with the National Diabetes Register.
