Increased interval for Pap smears flagged

The review, compiled as part of the National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) renewal, is expected to be considered by the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) on 28 November.

The review presents three new scenarios with the current arrangements as a comparator: conventional cytology with a three-year screening interval starting at 25 in line with international recommendations; liquid-based cytology with the same screening interval and initiation age; and HPV testing with the same initiation age but at no less than five-year intervals.

Professor Ian Hammond, chair of the NCSP renewal steering committee, said the decision about which scenario was chosen rested with MSAC but it could
