Incremental risk linked to HbA1c levels

The community-based cohort study was conducted in 10,200 patients in Israel who had their HbA1c measured because they were considered to be at risk of type 2 diabetes.

It showed that those with HbA1c between 5.5% and 6.0% had double the risk of type 2 diabetes, those between 6.0% and 6.5% had quadruple the risk, and those with 6.5% to less than 7% had seven times the risk.

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes was exponential, almost doubling with each 0.5% increase in HbA1c.
