India may have jumped the gun on leprosy control

Examination of trends in leprosy presentations at the outpatient department in a large Kolkata hospital suggested between 2008 and 2011 the proportion of cases with grade II disability progressively increased, likely reflecting increasing delay in detection, the authors said.

They said data suggested significant transmission of leprosy was ongoing in eastern India, and their findings may reflect the lack of efficacy of 12-month multidrug treatment compared to the previous regimen of 24-month treatment.
