Infants at risk from human milk bought online: study

The US researchers found high rates of pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella and Staphylococcus, and in some cases faecal contamination, in human breast milk samples purchased from the internet compared to samples from an accredited milk bank, which were pasteurised.

The age of individual internet milk samples sent through the post by online sellers was unknown, and nearly one in five samples arrived with no cooling method employed, such as gel packs or dry ice, the researchers said.
