Infection follows cuticle cut

A paronychia is caused when the cuticle is damaged letting in water and infection. An acute infection with pus like this one is due to staph and requires drainage and oral antibiotics. Candida causes a different type of paronychia with chronic dull redness of the posterior nail fold and minimal pus. The remedy is to let the cuticle regrow and keep the hands out of water. Also try 4% thymol in chloroform, one drop/bd to the base of the nail to act as a seal.
