Influenza co-infections described in Asia

Co-infection can trigger the emergence of new pandemic strains, though sequencing of virus isolates showed no “genetic recombination” had occurred, the researchers warned.

Co-infection cases in South East Asia deserve close scrutiny, they said, given the ongoing transmission of the avian influenza virus H5N1.

As of 10 October, the WHO had tallied 566 known human infections with H5N1 globally with a fatality rate of over 60%.
