Influenza vaccine offered moderate protection: study
USING a standard case test-negative design with data from more than 2500 patients, researchers found the trivalent flu vaccine offered 52% protection against hospitalisation with laboratory-confirmed influenza and 56% protection against presenting to a GP with flu during last year’s flu season.
The influenza A subtypes circulating during the season were later found to be antigenically similar to the H1 and H3 components of the vaccine.
While the predominant circulating B viruses were lineage matched, analysis showed antigenic drift, the researchers reported.
