Innovation could be a step in the wrong direction

An assessment of five widely used new hip and knee implant technologies reveals that they are no better and may even be worse than conventional implants.

The FDA-initiated review looked at three new hip replacement innovations (ceramic-on-ceramic bearings, modular femoral necks and uncemented mono block cups) along with two new knee innovations (high flexion knee replacement and gender-specific knee replacement), analysing the findings of 118 studies involving over 15,000 patients.
