Insulin requirement not affected by low carb diet in GDM

Some 152 women with GDM in a Spanish study were randomised to a diet where carbohydrate represented 40% of the energy content or a diet where it represented 55% of energy.

The number of women in each group who required insulin over the course of the study, around 55%, didn’t differ between the two groups and pregnancy outcomes were unaffected.

“The amount of carbohydrate in the diet may not be a key issue in future clinical recommendations on medical nutrition therapy for GDM,” the authors concluded.
