Internet obsession linked to depression
A study of 1200 teens aged 12–18 showed 6.4% were pathological internet users (PIU), 6.4% were pathological video gamers (PVG) and 1.8% were both. Nearly 80% of PVG were male, compared with 74% of PIU being female.
The strongest clinical features of both groups were tolerance (the need to spend increasing time on the internet), withdrawal, deception and conflict.
“PIU was associated with more severe comorbid axis I features than PVG, which may present complications for the assessment and treatment of this disorder,” the authors said.
