'Intriguing' breast cancer find

POSTMENOPAUSAL women with normal BMI who gain more than 5% weight raise their risk of breast cancer, a study shows.

A secondary analysis of the US Women’s Health Initiative trials, including more than 67,000 women, investigated the impact of BMI on risk of breast cancer in women aged 50–79 over a median of 13 years.

There was a dose-response relationship between increasing BMI and risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

Increased risk was seen in overweight and obese women, but was highest in those with a BMI ≥35, with an 86% higher risk of oestrogen receptor-positive and progesterone
