Jolie breast surgery may prompt gene test rush
The 37-year-old Oscar-winning actress, whose mother died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56, decided on the preventive action after being found to carry the BRCA1 gene.
Doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and 50% risk of ovarian cancer.
"Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk," Jolie wrote in an opinion piece for The New York Times.
About 5% of the 14,000 Australian breast cancer cases diagnosed each year involve mutated BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
But experts have emphasised that the complicated tests for the genes are
