Kidney disease a predictor of death in type 2 diabetes
Researchers examined 10-year mortality rates in 15,000 adults participating in a national health survey.
Kidney disease was diagnosed in 42.3% of people with diabetes and 9.4% without the condition. Among people without diabetes or kidney disease, 10-year mortality was 7.7%. It was 11.5% for those with diabetes but no kidney disease. For people with both conditions the rate was vastly higher at 31.1%.
“Even in the medically complex patients with type 2 diabetes, kidney disease is a very powerful predictor of premature death,” the authors said.
