Lack of guidelines hampers gout management

Patients with gout are being given excessive doses of colchicine and started too early on urate lowering therapy, a survey of GPs suggests.

Lack of accessible guidelines and out-of-date perceptions of gout being  a “disease of the rich glutton” may be responsible for poor adherence to best practice measures for the condition, says study author Dr Matthew Terrill, of the rheumatology department at Wollongong Hospital.
