Lack of informed consent with PSA?

An American study has assessed shared decision-making when PSA is used to screen for prostate cancer.

Information came from 3427 men aged 50–74 years taking part in the 2010 National Health Interview Survey.

Almost 56% of the men had been screened, with 66% of this group being tested in the previous year. In 52.5% of cases the test was recommended by the doctor.

Only 17% said they had discussed advantages and disadvantages of the test, 12% said uncertainties of using PSA for screening were discussed and 8% reported advantages, disadvantages and uncertainty were all discussed. There was no
