Lap banding 'cures a quarter of type 2 patients'

Long-term results from an Australian trial of gastric lap banding suggest it should be offered more widely to overweight patients with type 2 diabetes, an endocrinologist says.

Dr John Wentworth, from the Centre for Obesity Research and Education at Monash University, said five-year results from his randomised controlled trial, involving 45 patients, showed that lap banding achieved 12% average weight loss and resulted in 23% of patients gaining remission from diabetes.
