Legacy of smoking taking a toll on European women
Analysis of cancer deaths in Europe suggested lung cancer would overtake breast cancer as the main cause of cancer death among women across the European Union by 2015.
“This is already true in the UK and Poland,” said study author Professor Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan.
Lung cancer deaths have risen by 7% among women since 2009, whereas overall cancer deaths – and breast cancer deaths in particular - are decreasing due to improved screening, management and treatment.
