Less than the cost of one cup of coffee

GLOBAL spending on mental health is less than US$2 ($1.94) per person per year, and in low income countries amounts to less than 25c per person, according to the WHO Mental Health Atlas 2011.

Almost half the world’s population lives in countries where, on average, there is one psychiatrist or less to serve 200,000 people.

“Four out of five people with serious mental disorders living in low and middle income countries do not receive mental health services that they need,” the WHO said.

De-institutionalisation was occurring globally, with a “modest” decline in mental health beds from 2005 to 2011, but mental hospitals still account for 67% of total funding, the report said.
