Let nurses do “less complex” endoscopies: report

Nurses should be trained to perform the 170,000 “less complex” endoscopies gastroenterologists and other specialists currently do annually, says a new report from the Grattan Institute.

Co-authored by former federal health department head Stephen Duckett, the report noted endoscopy nurses have practised in the US since the 1970s and that there are more than 300 in the UK, providing almost one in seven endoscopies.

Appropriately trained endoscopy nurses could “free up
