Level of malnutrition was overestimated: UN

Latest research suggested that in 2010–12, nearly 870 million people, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment, according to the UN.

The revised data led to an estimate that in the last 20 years undernourishment has decreased by nearly 30% in Asia and the Pacific and has fallen from 14.6% in Latin America and the Caribbean in 1990 to 8.3% in 2012.

“Africa was the only region where the number of hungry grew over the period, from 175 million to 239 million, with nearly 20 million added in the past four years,” the UN said in a
