Lithium may help in dementia

Lithium in both standard and trace doses may reduce dementia rates through its neuroprotective effects, according to a systematic review.

The analysis of 24 studies found standard doses of lithium may have cognitive benefits for dementia prevention. Four randomised trials in particular found cognitive symptoms did not worsen compared with placebo.

Trace doses of lithium have not been measured for reduction of dementia, but have been shown to have other neurocognitive benefits such as improved mood.
