Liver enzyme linked to gestational diabetes
The US case-control study in 256 women with developed GDM showed that those who had gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels in the highest quartile before pregnancy had a twofold higher risk of GDM than those in the lowest quartile.
In contrast, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels did not predict risk of GDM.
The association between GGT levels and GDM was attenuated after adjusting for insulin resistance (IR), underlining the role of IR.
Enzyme levels in the participants were measured seven years on average before pregnancy.
