Longest study to date fails to link IVF with breast cancer

WOMEN undergoing repeated IVF cycles are no more at risk of developing breast cancer than the general population, according to a 20-year study.

Researchers in the Netherlands compared breast cancer incidence among a cohort of more than 19,000 women (median age 33) having IVF with about 6000 women having other fertility treatments and with the rate in the general Dutch population.

Overall they were able to look at 839 cases of invasive breast cancer and 109 cases of in situ breast cancer occurring by the time the women were aged in their mid-50s, finding no differences in
