Low birth weight increases hip-replacement risk

People born early or with low birth weight may be at an increased risk of hip arthroplasty in adulthood, according to Australian-led research.

The 3,604-person study led by Professor Flavia Cicuttini from Monash University found a significant association with low birth weight and preterm birth with the increased incidence of hip arthroplasty, independent of age, sex, BMI, education level, hypertension, diabetes, smoking and physical activity.
