Low birth weight linked to potent topical steroids
Commenting on the first published systematic review of safety of topical corticosteroids during pregnancy, the French pharmacovigilance experts highlighted a lack of definitive evidence but concluded that topical corticosteroids were “probably safe” during pregnancy, so long as best practice advice was followed.
Of seven studies included in the 2010 review paper, two had worrying results. One found topical steroids classed as very potent carried a significantly increased risk of low birth weight babies.
