Low health literacy a health hazard: study

The Medibank Private study found that nearly 60% of Australians may be unable to understand, access and communicate health information and 41% are described as having “adequate to high” levels of health literacy.

The survey, which focussed mainly on seniors, showed that low health literacy was associated with higher mortality, lack of medication adherence, lack of ability to interpret labels and health messages, increased hospitalisations and poorer overall health status in seniors.
