Lower BMI a spin-off benefit of community gardens
While other studies have measured the social benefits and improved nutrition in neighbourhoods with community gardens, researchers from the University of Utah are the first to demonstrate an effect on BMI.
Among more than 300 gardeners, women had an average BMI 1.84 lower than non-gardening neighbours, translating to a 4kg difference for a woman 165cm tall.
For men, BMI among gardeners was 2.36 points lower, a difference of 7kg for those 178cm tall.
