Lupus patients in remission could stop immunotherapy

Lupus patients in remission can safely stop immunotherapy without running the risk of flares, particularly if they taper off medications slowly, the conference has heard.

The Canadian study of almost 100 lupus patients in remission who were taking low dose prednisolone and had stopped taking their immunosuppressant found that 70 percent remained flare free two-years later.

Patients with positive serology at the time of stopping their immunosuppressant were more likely to have a disease flare (68% vs 42%), the study authors found.
