Macular degeneration under-recognised in Africa

Researchers, who were part-funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation, have conducted a slit lamp study in Kenya, finding an overall AMD prevalence of 12.4% among 4000 individuals older than 50 years.

“Low vision services remain a hugely neglected area of care on the African continent; strengthening these services might be a cost-effective use of limited resources in the interim period,” the authors wrote, adding there was also a need to train more African-based ophthalm
