Malaria control efforts working

However the burden of malaria mortality may have been underestimated over the years by WHO, US and Australian researchers say.

Malaria deaths in Africa increased from 493,000 in 1980 to peak at 1.6 million in 2004, before dropping around 30% to 1.1 million in 2010.

This saw the global malaria toll jump from 995,000 deaths in 1980 to 1.8 million at the peak, and then decline to 1.2 million.

“There has been a rapid decrease in malaria mortality in Africa because of the scaling up of control activities,” the authors said.
