Malaria parasite cells may be harnessed for vaccine

According to a news item in JAMA, it’s been known for 40 years that bites from irradiated mosquitoes infected with P. falciparum can induce immunity to malaria but technical challenges prevented purification and preservation of the sporozoites.

Now US government researchers have met the challenge to provide proof of concept. None of six individuals injected with five doses of the vaccine became infected compared to five of six controls.
