McGorry attacks value of DSM-5

In a Lancet article, Professor McGorry, of the Orygen Youth Health Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, said “little more than incremental and desultory change” was expected.

Professor McGorry and Dutch psychiatrist Jim van Os argue that traditional revisions of diagnostic manuals “will not reinvent diagnosis”.

Clinical staging, an initiative linking the tertiary care perspective to the more inclusive population-based and primary care experience, “might be best suited” to the challenge of modernising diagnosis, they  said.
