Media reporting slashes osteoporosis prescribing

A drop in the use of osteoporosis medications in Australia since 2007 is probably due to negative media reporting, say Queensland researchers.

Their study looked at prescriptions from 2002 to 2010 for a range of osteoporosis drugs in older women, including alendronate, zoledronic acid, risedronate and raloxefene, among others.

Prescribing of these drugs rose steadily until 2007, when alendronate in particular went into a decline from which it has yet to recover.
