Medical certificates for mental illness rare

The analysis of 125,000 initial medical certificates issued by 9750 GPs in Victoria between 2003 and 2010 showed that 74% recommended workers were unfit for work and 23% recommended alternative duties.

Only 3% of certificates recommended workers were fit for work.

However, while 28% of the initial medical certificates were issued for alternative duties for musculoskeletal injuries, alternative duties were recommended for only 5% of patients with a mental health condition.
