Melanoma deaths higher in young males than females

Males accounted for 40% of melanoma cases among young people but comprised nearly 64% of melanoma deaths, researchers found.

Experts suggest young men are less likely to visit GPs and less likely to inspect their own skin.

However, an accompanying editorial said the consistent finding of a gender-based survival difference across all tumour thickness categories and anatomic sites suggested there might be a fundamental biological difference in ‘male’ compared to ‘female’ melanoma.
