Men warned on dangers of misusing testosterone therapy
The action follows the 2013 publication of two studies that suggested there was an increased risk of cardiovascular events among men prescribed testosterone therapy.
It also comes less than a week after the publication of another study showing men over 65 years had a twofold increased risk of heart attack within 90 days of commencing testosterone therapy.
Professor David Handelsman, director of the ANZAC Research Institute at the University of Sydney, who has published extensive research on global and Australian testosterone prescribing trends, said he welcomes the FDA announcement.
“We’ve seen a remarkable increase in the prescribing of testosterone products in most regions over the last two decades, despite the absence of any new approved indications for use,” he told MO, adding that most men treated do not have clear evidence of having a condition that requires androgen replacement
