Meningitis outbreak a regulatory scandal

Since 21 May a pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center (NECC), prepared and shipped three batches of methylprednisolone acetate to US healthcare providers, with an unknown number being contaminated.

Once NECC was identified as the source of the 400 fungal meningitis cases and 29 deaths (as MO went to press), a review of the pharmacy’s records showed that its clean rooms had repeatedly tested positive for bacteria or mould in the past year and that it had failed to adequately sterilise equipment.
