Mental health of aid workers at high risk

US researchers surveyed 212 international humanitarian workers from 19 NGOs, finding rates of anxiety rose from 3.8% prior to deployment to 11.8% post-deployment. Symptoms of depression rose from 10.4% to 19.5%.

“It is quite common for people returning from deployment to be overwhelmed by the comforts and choices available, but unable to discuss their feelings with friends and family,” the authors said in an accompanying press release.
