Mental health in diabetes overlooked: experts

Professor Jane Speight, director of the Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes, said that for many people with diabetes, depressive symptoms can often be explained by the distress they feel in relation to their diabetes or its complications.

“It’s often a vicious cycle of difficulties with self-management and achieving target blood glucose levels leading to distress, which can become severe and requires the understanding and support of health professionals,” she said at the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) and the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) annual scientific meeting on Wednesday. 

The Diabetes MILES (Management and Impact for Long-term Empowerment and Success) study, a 2011 national survey involving more than 3300 Australian adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, also showed that one in six people with diabetes experience moderate to severe anxiety and one in five experience severe diabetes-related
