Mental illness barrier to employment opportunity

Thirty-five per cent of the employers surveyed said they were unlikely to hire someone with a mental illness, with more than 20% citing concerns that their behaviour would be unpredictable and changeable.

Another barrier was the perception that fellow staff would need to be educated about mental illness. A third of respondents were “neutral” about whether they would knowingly employ someone with a mental illness.
